OUR JOURNEY
DigiLink initially launched operations with a focus on prepress services, and today prepress remains a significant important part of its operation, for example, providing custom retouching services — to many area top advertising and PR agencies. Committed to offering its customers with flexibility and innovation, DigiLink responded by adding its first offset press in 2002. From there DigiLink grew steadily, relocating twice in 13 years in order to expand its facility. DigiLink has transformed from an entrepreneurial start-up to a full-service, award-winning commercial printer offering high quality marketing and business printing services, canvas photo and wall art, banners and mailing and distribution services. DigiLink is a proud sponsor for many local community organizations, and has supported various art events and charitable events with its generous contributions. In March 2008, DigiLink moved to a new 38,000-square-foot facility that allowed it to consolidate its printing, binding, and mailing services at one location for greater efficiency.
Today, DigiLink serves clients throughout the United States, and is recognized as one of the largest, most well equipped and most experienced commercial print and mail operations in the metropolitan Washington, DC region.

FINCH PAPERS
Your choice of using Finch uncoated paper shows your commitment to environmental responsibility and helps sustain natural American forests.
Finch Paper earned Forest Management and Chain-of-Custody certifications from the Forest Stewardship Council (FSC) and the Sustainable Forestry Initiative® (SFI) program. These certifications attest that all of the wood used to make the certified paper comes from non-threatened, responsibly managed forests.
Paper Made Using Recycled Fiber
Finch Paper uses an average of 3 million pounds of post-consumer recycled fiber in our papers each year, conserving vast amounts of landfill space and preventing the generation of methane — a greenhouse gas that is created when paper in landfills decomposes. Finch Premium Blend and Finch Casa Opaque are made with 30% recycled fiber, meeting the EPA requirements for federally funded paper purchases. Finch Fine, Finch Fine iD and Finch Fine Color Copy are made with 10% recycled fiber.
Paper Made Using Green Energy
Approximately two-thirds of the energy used by Finch Paper comes from renewable, green energy sources – utilizing the nearby Hudson River for hydroelectricity, and an onsite cogeneration facility that burns biomass (bark, sawdust and wood chips) to power its paper machines.
Paper Made With A Feet-in-the-Forest℠ Approach to Sustainable Forestry
For more than a century, Finch Paper has employed its own team of professional foresters who have sustainably managed more than 160,000 acres of productive forestland – most notably the “Finch forests” in the heart of New York’s Adirondack Park. While Finch sold this spectacular land to the internationally recognized conservation organization The Nature Conservancy in 2007, Finch foresters continue to manage TNC lands, while offering their decades of experience and expertise to other private and public forest owners.
- Visit the Finch is in the Forest blog, where Finch’s Senior Forester Roger Dziengeleski reduces the complexity surrounding green paper choices.
- Communicate your green paper choice with Finch’s Environmental Logos. Download the “Printed on Finch Paper” logo and recycled content logos, and learn how to correctly use SFI and FSC logos, on Finch’s Environmental Logos page.

RICOH
Anyone entering the digital print market typically has a focus on working with variable-data printing (VDP). While static digital print has the advantage of fast turnarounds and smaller quantities, it is essentially commodity print. When you add variable-data printing to personalize the printed piece, there is increased value to the customer along with a corresponding rise in responses, sales, and/or participation. This increased value allows for a boost in revenue. Variable-data printing is not considered a commodity because it takes experience, creativity, and planning to produce a successful variable-data campaign. The print service provider must learn more about the customer's customers. Thinking like a marketing firm is required to design a piece and incorporate variable text and graphics that will motivate the recipient to act on an offer.
There are four critical elements to becoming successful in variable-data printing:
A. A clear vision of the mission, goal, or objective of the campaign
B. Clean relevant data that allows you to target the message
C. Staff that can manipulate the database and apply appropriate rules to personalize the text and images in the printed piece
D. A sales team able to market the service and show the customer the value of the effort required to produce an effective variable-data campaign
Keep in mind, the goal/objective of the variable-data campaign drives the format of the database.
When the printer meets with the customer to plan a strategy using variable data, they must work together carefully to identify the campaign's goals. You may start with the database and determine what you can do; or you may start with the end result and determine what data should be added to the database. Table 1 provides a list of objectives found in dozens of case studies of successful campaigns. It is a starting point and should never be considered an all-inclusive list. When you consider the objectives of a variable-data campaign, it may become crystal clear what data needs to be available. Possibly, you'll come up with another set of questions that need to be addressed to establish the components of the database.

ALEXANDRIA'S MAYOR TOURS THE NEW DIGILINK FACILITY
William Euille-the mayor of the city of Alexandria, Va.-visited DigiLink's expansive new 38,000-square-foot facility at 840 South Pickett St. Accompanied by Christy Blake of the Alexandria Economic Development Partnership, Inc. Euille saw DigiLink's operations firsthand and took special interest in the company's environmental initiatives.
"We felt pleased and proud to show Mayor Euille some of our state-of-the-art green technology," says Michael Wight, DigiLink's president and chief executive officer. "For example, we use waterless based inks that contain vegetable based oil, with low — volatile organic compounds. That not only helps conserve oil resources, but also helps reduce a major source of pollution in the printing industry."
The mayor and other guests learned how DigiLink recycles not only paper, but also the aluminum used in producing printing plates. They were also interested in DigiLink's Chain-of-Custody Certification from the Forest Stewardship Council, which assures that the company respects sustainability and minimizes environmental impact from source to finished product.
As one of the nation's leading full-service printers, DigiLink moved to facility to consolidate its prepress, printing, and mailing operations under one roof. With room for future expansion, the new facility represents part of Alexandria's continued economic growth.

G7 MASTER CERTIFIED
WHY ARE PRINT BUYERS MAKING G7 A REQUIREMENT?
Typically a print‐buy is either distributed geographically or distributed across different print types. So, for example, a buyer may want to purchase marketing collateral, packaging and signage with the same brand imagery. Clearly the substrate, gamut and other print characteristics will vary for the different print products. But if all the print products have the same gray balance and neutral tonality defined by G7, they will look remarkably alike to the human eye. Because buyers believe the similarity of the visual appearance across print products is critical, they now make G7 a buying requirement.
